Persuasive Speech notes

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when formatting your persuasive speech.

1. Make sure that your outline and therefore your speech is either inductive or deductive. (Yes, you have to turn in your outline prior to giving the speech. Highlight your main persuasive idea.)

2. I will be looking for examples of ethos (credibility), pathos (emotional appeal), and logos (logical reasoning) in your speech and outline. You will demonstrate these proofs in your content, posture/ appearance, and speaking.

3. Remember that persuading does not necessarily mean changing minds. Persuading can mean enhancing present ideas or perhaps introducing a new way to look at something. Remember: "Breakfast Club as a cultural film".

4. Practice your speech. Try to avoid the "ums" and "likes". Make sure that you capture your audience. Stay within the time limits of 4- 6 min. I will cut you off.

5. Make sure that you have an introduction and a conclusion. Everyone must have a powerpoint!!!

6. Lastly, KEEP IT CLEAN!!!! ANY INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE OR MATERIAL WILL BE IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN AND FAILED!!!!!!!!!!

If there is anything else, I will post it later.

ATTENTION!!!!!

Attention Class:

There have been some changes to the schedule this week! Your papers are due today either electronically or in class. We will not have class on Wednesday! It will be used as an independent Speech workday!! We will not be watching movies in class, instead I will collect papers and briefly review the expectations for the persuasive speech and answer any questions you may have. I apologize for any inconveniences!! Also, I will not have office hours on Wednesday this week!!

Informative Speech Tips

I have found a few sites online that can help you with selecting a good speech topic..

http://www.speech-topics-help.com/informative-speech-topics.html

http://www.myspeechclass.com/informativetopics2.html

http://www.presentationhelper.co.uk/informative_speech_topic.htm

Here are some tips to consider about informative speeches that I found at College University. suite 101.com....

Speak about something you know about. Pick something that you already have some knowledge about. Otherwise, you're going to have to do an awful lot of research to be able to speak with confidence about your topic.

Speak about something you care about. Enthusiastic teachers are good teachers. You know that from being a student, right? The audience isn't going to listen or learn much unless you convey to them that this is a topic worth learning about.

Speak about something the audience will care about. This is very important. If you speak about something that is relevant to your audience, they are much more likely to pay attention and learn something.

Choose a topic that is of interest to the whole audience. A speech about trendy women's hairstyles may be of interest to many of the females in your audience, but most of the males will not find this relevant at all. Be careful not to lose part of your audience.

Choose an informative speech topic that's not too broad. If you choose a topic that's too broad, you're not going to have enough time to talk about it in much detail. For example, don't give a speech about "museums in the Europe." There's thousands of them, so this topic is way too broad. Narrow it down to something like "art museums in Amsterdam," and you have a manageable topic. You also don't want to choose a topic that's too narrow, but this is a much less common problem.

Avoid topics that everyone already knows about. If the information in your speech is already known, your speech isn't going to inform them of anything new. Don't give a speech about freshman orientation or about popular student hangouts.

Avoid highly complex topics. You probably only have a short period to speech, so explaining a technical or complicated issue well is very difficult. Complex speeches tend to be filled with jargon, or technical words that most of your audience is not familiar with.

Make sure your speech isn't actually a persuasive speech. This is very important, and your public speaking instructor may downgrade you if you fail to do this. An informative speech teaches the audience about something. A persuasive speech asks the audience members to change their attitudes or behaviors. Be careful not to cross the line.

2. How does self disclosure work and how does it affect communication?
3.Write a brief paragraph describing the Johari Window and it's purpose in communication.
4. What are three ways to build supportive climates mentioned in the text?
5. What is the difference between supportive and defensive climates and what factor affect these areas?

You will need to have the answers to these questions ready to be prepared for class on Wednesday!!

What if I am anxious about the speeches??

In case any of you are becoming nervous about speaking in front of the class, here are some helpful hints and reminders to help you.

1. VISUALIZE. Visualize the speech happening. Use your script to visualize where, when, and how your speech will take place. Visualize a desirable audience, perhaps of friends and family. And visualize finishing the speech. Also, share these visions with your group so that you all have a shared meaning of the speech.

2. Remember, this speech will on average require the actual speaking of an individual in the group to be 4 minutes. Out of all your speeches you give in the course, an individual will speak for about 16 minutes total out of 2004 total class minutes. Not so much... And many of you have spoke out longer during class and question of the day.

3. Know that you are in a safe environment with classmates that all feel as you do. In addition, if we were all great speakers and could not improve, we would not be in this class. Each person will be a better communicator and stronger person after this speech by default even in the worst case scenario.

4. Lastly, I believe in everyone of you and I know that you will all do a fine job. If you are not a bit nervous about the speech, I would wonder how much it mattered to you?? Make sense?

( It is not a bad idea to release some of the nervous tension by taking a brisk walk or some other form of light exercise before the speech. This way the extra adrenaline will not cause you to shake or sweat so much. Again, these are very natural occurences during a speech.)

TESTS!!!

Attention students. I hope that you all have reflected on your tests and used your scores to gage how well you are doing in the course. Please also use these scores as a guide as to how to proceed in the class. The majority of you have room for more preparation such as creating flash cards, study groups, or working more concretely with the blog questions. Perhaps asking questions would help either in class or during my office hours.

Whatever the situation, please know that it is ultimately your grade and your responsibility to do all you can to produce good test scores and speech grades in this class. I will facilitate your learning and evaluate you fairly and effectively.

Just a reminder

Hello all. I just wanted to post a reminder about the amendment to the syllabus. After a class vote, we will be taking both Wednesday and Friday of this week to work on group speeches. Next week we will begin speeches. We will make a final decision as to the order of speeches Wednesday during class.

Do recall that I have announced twice and this is third that anyone that does not come to class on test days, speech days, speech workdays, and on days that other class speeches are going on will fail their perspective test and/ or speech!!!! The only exception to the rule is to clear the absence with me. I must agree to excuse you or you will be failed.

Thanks.

Attention!!!

Attention com 114 students, I am writing to make a note that attendance is extremely important in this class. It is especially critical during group speech and test time!! Those of you that do not come to class on Wednesday, Sept. 23rd will not be considered a part of your group and will not participate in group speeches. Non- participation will result in an F for the group speech.

In addition, those that are not present for the test on Monday will also receive an F.

Receiving a zero for either the test or speech will make it difficult if not impossible to pass the class.

Long story short, BE IN CLASS!!!

Friday, September 12, 2008

Attention!!!

Calling all Comm 114 class participants. I have decided that we will not be covering chapter 14 on the first test!! It is important for Monday that you all have a solid understanding of the concepts in Chapters 5 and 6 that the questions assess.

Also, it is never too early to start preparing for the first test!!

Flash cards, study sessions, and quizzing one another are great ways to learn and retain the material!!
